Molar Mass Calculator - An Introduction

A crucial instrument for determining the amount of a substance needed in a chemical reaction. Finding the molar mass of all the atoms in a molecule becomes hard sometimes but it is not more difficult as our mole mass calculator is here to give you a helping hand.

Molar Mass Calculator

Our molar mass formula calculator eases the hard steps for you. Before proceeding let us give you some information about molar mass.

Definition of molar mass:

The ratio of the mass of the substance to the amount of that substance is the molar mass of that substance. It is denoted by the unit g/mol. The molar mass is equal to 1 mole of a substance or atom which is equal to 6.02 x 10^23 atoms. Take the example of neon. The atomic mass of neon is 20.1797 amu or 20.1797 g/mol. This means that 20.1797 grams of neon contain one mole or 6.022 x 10^23 neon atoms.

Related: If you want to convert the grams to moles then you may utilize our grams to mole calculator.

The formula used by the mole mass calculator:

The formula for finding the molar mass which our molar mass calculator uses is,

M = m/n

Where,

M: Molar mass of the substance

m: mass of the substance in grams (g)

n: number of moles of the substance

Why is finding molar mass important?

Finding the molar mass is important for several reasons. As discussed earlier molar mass is important but why is it important? We are going to make things simpler for you.

Finding the amount of substance:

Molar mass helps us determine the number of moles of a substance and helps us to convert given mass to moles. This is helpful for chemists to find the actual amount of the substance needed for the chemical reaction.

Finding the state of matter:

If the molar mass of a substance is known then we can find out the state of matter of the substance. An increased molar mass means that the substance is denser which ultimately means that the substance is in the solid state.

In experiments:

If the molar mass of a substance is known then the chemist can know how much of a substance is required for the experiment. For that they convert the moles from atoms. So there wouldn’t be excess use of the substance.

Finding the molar mass of elements:

Determining the molar mass of molecules is sometimes hard because of the complex structures of the molecules or the compounds. Our molar mass calculator with steps will help you find that but we will also help you find it manually. So here are some examples so that you understand it better,

Example 1:

Find the molar mass of 40g of sodium metal.

Solution:

Number of moles present in the 40g of sodium = mass / molar mass

The moles of sodium = 40/23 = 1.74 mol

Now, we will find the molar mass by inputting the given value,

Molar mass = 40 / 1.74 = 22.98

Hence, the molar mass of sodium is 22.98 ≌ 23 which is equal to the atomic mass of the substance (sodium).

Example 2:

Determine the molar mass of Copper Sulfate (CuSO4).

Solution:

Copper sulfate (CuSO4) contains 1 atom of copper, 1 atom of sulfur, and 4 atoms of oxygen. So, the molar mass of the whole molecule would be,

Copper (Cu) = 1 x 63.546

= 63.546

Sulfur (S) = 1 x 32.06

= 32.06

Oxygen (O) = 4 x 15.99

= 63.96

So the molar mass of the whole molecule can be found by adding them all,

63.546 + 32.06 + 63.96 = 159.566 g/mol

Related: you can use our molecular formula calculator for finding the molecular weight of the molecules.
